As a beautician you would be responsible for providing treatments directly to clients and giving them personal advice on beauty treatments. You job in beauty would include
- Application and advice on treatments
- Facials – cleansing, toning and massaging
- Manicures – treatment of the nails
- Hair removal, waxing, threading, electrolysis
- Non-surgical skin treatments
- Eyebrow shaping and colouring
- Application of make up
As you become better trained at your job in beauty there is the possibility to offer specialist treatments, these include: massage, hydrotherapy, reflexology and aromatherapy.
As a trainee beautician you may have day-to-day rolls within the spa or salon such as reception work, welcoming clients, booking appointments, telephone operation, ordering supplies and keeping client history up-to-date.
What training will you require to become a beautician?
If you are just starting your career you will need to gain a level 3 qualification for most employers to be satisfied that you have the correct skill set.
- City & Guilds Level 3 Diploma in Beauty Therapy
- City & Guilds Level 3 Diploma in Specialist Beauty Therapy
- Or equivalent from other training organisations
You can complete your beauty training with private schools or a college course, whichever your timescales and budget match. You may even be able to get free training from a future employer.
Career development paths
Once you are established within the beauty industry you can develop your career by taking part in more beauty training through BTEC HNDs and foundation degrees. Subjects mainly include management of spas and salons and can be taken from a range of institutes. Once you are fully trained in management you can look at an increase in pay to around £20,000 a year depending on what area you work in, with many London salons and spas paying well over £30,000.
