Hairdresser job description

You will find a huge variety of hair stylist jobs at Salonjobseeker.com. A career as a hair stylist is an exciting and rewarding job. Now that you have qualified it's time for you to take full control. A hair stylists job role will involve running your own hairdressing column and providing an exceptional service to each client, every day.

Modern hairdressers will call on the knowledge they have learnt at hairdressing college and from their peers within the salon to carry out practical work of the highest possible quality.  For the first year or so your work may well be checked by a senior stylist.  You should also continue to learn and look to improve any areas of weakness.

What would a hairdresser job description include? Most hairdresser jobs involve carrying out some common tasks, including the following duties:

Consultations
The consultation is possibly the most important aspect of hair stylist jobs.  The hair stylist will need to listen carefully to the clients requirements and come up with a solution providing a style that will suit the clients face size and shape.

Cutting
From fringe trims to full restyles, cutting forms a common aspect of stylists.  Hair stylists will use all their knowledge from traditional to cutting edge techniques performing cuts of the highest quality.

Cutting will involve the use of cutting scissors, thinning scissors, razors and occasionally clippers.  Stylists should look to learn to use all techniques available to them, ensuring that they become a successful all round hairdresser, this in turn will provide you with added security and open doors to a greater choice of job opportunities in hairdressing in the future.

Skills such as more traditional barbering are techniques that many ladies hairdressers are often not required to use regularly, making a point to learn these skills can prove to be an invaluable string to your bow.

Colouring
Many salons employ colour technicians or colour specialists to deal with the salons colouring services.  However, most hairdressers will be fully skilled and proficient in the area.  A detailed consultation forms the basis of the procedure with stylist and client discussing suitable colours from a colour book.

Blow-drying
Blow-drying, straightening and styling are all jobs and skills that hair stylists will carry out every day.  Stylists will use the latest techniques and products to create an outstanding finished style. A selection of brushes, straightening irons and hair products should be in every stylists equipment box.
Setting is another technique that many stylists use regularly using rollers to create curl.

Perming
Hairdressers will use perming to create bounce and curl.  Perming is an area of ladies hairdressing that has declined in popularity in previous years as the trends of ladies styles has changed.  However, there are still trusted crowds that continue to have their perm and so it continues to be a skill that stylists are proficient in.

Product advice
Stylists will need to be confident and enthusiastic in recommending products.  Many salons expect hair stylists to provide professional advise and recommend products to clients. This will assist in driving salon sales as well as providing the stylist with the opportunity to earn a little extra in commission, a great perk of many jobs.

There are many areas of hairdressing that a hair stylist can choose to specialise in once qualified. Colouring, Barbering, Afro Caribbean, or even sales all provide job opportunities for hair stylists with flair in a particular area of hairdressing to excel further. This also means that the hairdresser job descriptions can vary from salon to salon.
